Gustav nears Jamaica as New Orleans keeps watch (AP)
This image provided by NOAA taken at 3:45 a.m. EDT Thursday Aug. 28, 2008 shows Tropical Storm Gustav located about 80 miles east of Kingston Jamaica. Gustav is moving toward the southwest near 8 mph. The center of Gustav is expected to pass very close to Jamaica later today. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph with higher gusts.  Strengthening is forecast over the next 48 hours and Gustav could regain hurricane strength by Friday. Further out in the Atlantic is Tropical Depression Eight. The newly formed tropical depression was located about 355 miles east-northeast of the northern leeward islands and is moving toward the west-northwest near 5 mph a turn to the northwest is expected later today. On this track the depression will be passing well north of the leeward islands during the next 24 hours maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts.  The depression has the potential to become a tropical storm later today or Friday.
