THE TEMECULA VALLEY
UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

The general boundaries extend north to Baxter Road in French Valley, south to the Riverside County line, east to Vail Lake, and west to the Temecula city limit.  The District covers approximately 148 square miles.

The district includes 12 elementary schools, two charter schools, one K-8 Home School, four middle schools, one continuation high school and two comprehensive high schools.

Approximately 21,000 students (Grades K-12) are currently enrolled in the district.

Approximately 9.9% of the students in the District speak a language other than English.  About 4.1% of the district’s student population is limited or non-English proficient.  Nearly 60 separate languages and dialects comprise the home language of these students (80% being the Spanish language).

Approximately 15% of the students enrolled in the district qualify for free or reduced priced lunches.

• The district strives to provide a variety of exemplary programs that meet the educational needs of all students.  Planning/goal setting activities often include staff, parents, students and the business community.

THE COMMUNITY
Temecula and the surrounding area were once cattle and cowboy country.  Kaiser Development Company purchased 97,500 acres, including the old Vail Ranch in 1964 and master-planned the community of Temecula for quality growth.  The original plan has continued enthusiasm and a broad experience of successful, quality development.  Temecula became incorporated as a city on December 1, 1989.  Temecula is a unique, planned community which truly offers a diversification of affordable housing, growing employment opportunities and a healthy, natural environment.

DISTRICT PHILOSOPHY
The Temecula Valley Unified School District believes that the future of our country is dependent on the young people who are being educated in our schools.  Therefore, we are committed to providing an environment in which all children are encouraged to develop to their maximum potential.  The learning environment must be an exciting, positive, safe place where children are encouraged to grow and develop.  This requires a professional, mutually committed staff who demonstrate a clear understanding of our mission and accept the responsibility for working with our children.  We expect that staff, parents, business and community members join us in supporting this fundamental philosophy.

DISTRICT GOALS
The Temecula Valley Unified School District Governing Board believes that all employees should work together to provide the maximum support for students in order to have students achieve at their highest level.  The accountability for this expectation rests with all employees, district-level and site-level.  The Temecula Valley Unified School District Governing Board accepts their responsibility for ensuring that all employees respond positively to this expectation.  District goals have been identified in three areas: Curriculum, Instruction, and Management.

THE STAFF
Excellence in the schools requires excellence in teaching.  The administration of the Temecula Valley Unified School District supports its entire staff so they may achieve educational goals.  We are committed to staff training that improves the quality of a variety of subjects and instructional techniques. Reading, writing and mathematics are the backbone of our fine educational program.  From kindergarten through the upper grades, children are encouraged to master the fundamentals of reading, writing, and mathematics and to establish the habit of reading and writing for pleasure and knowledge.  Our teachers use a variety of methods from basic phonetic systems to book clubs, read-aloud stories, and reading games to stimulate interest and achievement in reading.  We also stress spelling, science, language arts, social studies and offer music, art, and physical education.

THE FAMILY
Temecula Valley Unified School District recognizes that the foundation of good education begins in the home.  We expect our students’ families to communicate with us.  Tell us what you like about the schools—and what could be improved.

We invite parents to get involved.  Volunteer in the classroom, serve on the School Site Council, attend PTA and school board meetings, visit us at Open House and Back-To-School Night, sign up for teacher conferences, and talk to your children about their classes, teachers and assignments.  Most of all, we support a school, parent, community coalition dedicated to creating an environmental of excellence in which to raise the youth of today…the citizens and leaders of tomorrow.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM
Language arts (reading, speaking, listening, writing) and mathematics are the cornerstone of our instructional program, from the time the student enters our district until they graduate.  History/social science, science, visual and performing arts health and physical education are the other building blocks of the district instructional program.  Our program  emphasizes that learning is a life-long endeavor.

The district is committed to the goal of staff members modeling the pursuit of life-long learning to all of our students.  In an effort to meet this goal, a staff development program is in place to enable the teacher to improve both the quality of the curriculum and their instructional delivery techniques.  This is accomplished through training seminars, workshops and conference attendance.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS
